Letter Hello, I just wanted to write to you to keep you posted on
our work in Uganda. For although I may be the primary person
on the ground in Uganda, it is only through your support
that I am able to make a difference. So I very definitely
see the work as a partnership between each of us. As I will be flat out over the next 2 weeks I wanted
to write to you now while I have a free moment to
spare. As usual in Uganda, the time has been a mixture of
major problems and frustrations with wondrous opportunities,
results, joy and love. South African Airways gave me over $700 worth of
excess baggage allowance (to transport training materials,
microphones and other items). However my 3 bags took 5 days
to arrive. I'd been happy to wash my one set of underwear
and socks every night - and to use a fan to dry them
overnight - but I was getting nervous as I had an
appointment with the 2nd most powerful man in Uganda on
Friday. So I was very relieved when the luggage containing
my suit (and fresh underwear) arrived at 1am on Thursday
morning. I also feel so blessed by your support. We are
currently buying a huge custom-made tent for A$3,000 and a
van for $6,700 (over 10 years old but in immaculate
condition). And although this is a lot of money to outlay,
it enables us over the next 12 days to house, train and
transport 10 volunteer trainers who will be working on our
behalf in the North-West of Uganda. The tent will also be
the venue for some of our courses and our tri-weekly
discussion groups/mini trainings that are held at the
Institute. And the van has become essential in transporting
our training equipment, resources, seats, tables, manuals
etc., as well as transporting our own 10 full-time
volunteers, and others as needed. We are still operating on mega-frugal mode - eg.-
instead of buying a Tea Urn (which costs A$650) we bought 2
esky dispensers (for $35 each) and will fill these with 20
kettles worth of water. And fortunately the 10 volunteer
trainers from the country aren't too demanding: e.g. 100kg
of maize (costing $100) will provide most of the 100+
dinners needed, and they've said they're quite happy with
mats (with no pillows) for bedding. We've also sourced a
caterer who can provide the 550 lunches needed (for our 4
programs) for just $1 - $1.50 each. So already your support has given us the opportunity
to reach into the country areas who most need this training,
and to utilise the goodwill, the love and the time of 10
people who are prepared to work and to travel through their
districts as volunteer trainers. So thank you once again. Love,
